Metal-on-metal hip implants such as the DePuy ASR hip replacement systems were supposed to be the best development to come in recent years in the hip replacement surgery field. It was supposed to benefit patients in many ways. However, instead of having an improved quality of life, it has become a nightmare to thousands of patients. Serious complications like metallosis have hounded patients and have even led to legal actions such as the DePuy ASR Hip Lawsuit. Metallosis has been reported as one of the adverse effects suffered by patients implanted with this type of device. This condition is caused by the buildup of tiny metallic particles in the tissues surrounding the affected hip joint. The friction between the metallic components of the implants has been determined to be the cause of these debris. A person affected with metallosis will experience severe joint pain, get a feeling of instability, and will sense an increasing noise coming from the joints. These symptoms will appear after a number of months following the procedure and will continue to worsen unless attended to. These may lead to mental cognitive problems, emotional imbalance and problems with the nervous system.

Kalamazoo, Michigan-based Stryker Corporation, one of the world’s leading medical technology companies, has been facing countless lawsuits lately. This is because of their faulty hip prosthesis devices which they pulled out from the market in July 2012. One of them is the Stryker ABG II hip replacement recall. Shelley Wilson had a total arthroplasty on her right hip, and she was implanted with acetabular shell, acetabular liner, femoral head, and hip stem. Based on the report, she was experiencing dislocation of the implant for quite a number of times, putting her in pain as well. She then needed to have a revision surgery, so by October 11, 2010 she had the operation. There have been many reports concerning the complications that these metal-on-metal hip implants caused. Many of its recipients filed cases against the manufacturers of these hip prostheses. On October 22, 2012, a Stryker lawyer filed a case against Stryker Orthopaedics and Howmedica Osteonics, Corp. on behalf of Wilson. The plaintiff claims that the hip implant she received was defective leading her to experience some medical problems. Wilson is trying to get around $75,000 of compensation for the problems it caused her which include medical fees, the pain and suffering which cannot be really paid, and for having no salary. This coming March 21, 2013 a case management conference is arranged.
